Red Cross Blood Drive: March 2024

The clouds and rain did not keep away our brave blood donors who cam out to give the gift of life.  Because of their efforts, we helped save the lives of 51 people in and around our community.  Thank you for your willingness!  We are looking to have our next drive in July if you would like to come out and join us to do the good that we can.

Comfort & Company- A Valentine's Social For Widows & Widowers

Sunday, February 11, 2024

Happy Valentine's Day! We were able to celebrate love and support in Jarrettsville this past Sunday at our second annual widows and widowers Valentine's luncheon. About 25 widows gathered together to eat, share stories, and be encouraged by our Doug Restrick that none of us go it alone. Friends from last year and new friends from this year chatted and laughed and enjoyed a lunch catered by Sunny Day and an ice cream bar from Jarrettsville Creamery. Each of our guests left with a scented candle to keep the light going. We are thankful for this opportunity to share love with our community."

A Forever in Our Hearts Gathering:

November 8, 2023

Our community is filled with grieving hearts as we remember our loved ones who have passed away over the last few years. It is important that we come together as a community to support each other during these difficult times when so many have not had the opportunity to grieve collectively.

We would like to invite you to a Forever in Our Hearts Gathering on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 6:30 pm to 7:30pm at our Bel Air location of McComas Family Funeral Homes. This outdoor gathering will provide a safe and comfortable space for us to come together and honor the memory of those we have lost through words of welcome, a message of comfort from Doug Restrick, candle lighting and music from Siblings' Sounds. There will be warm drinks and sweet treats, firepits and hopefully fellowship and healing.

We understand that losing someone you love is never easy, but we believe that by coming together in remembrance, we can find peace and comfort in each other. We hope to see you there.

Halloween Blood Drive: October 31, 2023

This is no trick...it was a treat to have all the donors who came to the McComas Celebration of Life Center in Jarrettsville to help give the gift of life by making a blood donation. Some came dressed for Halloween, but all helped to supply the need within our community and beyond.  Because of these efforts, we helped save the lives of 84 people!

Valentine's Social for Widows and Widowers: February 12, 2023

Good company and much needed comfort was given to all who turned out for a very successful Valentine's luncheon on February 12 for widows and widowers in our community. Our guests were met with welcome from Howard IV, Melissa, and Amy.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch from Acappella, our catering partner and locally-owned family restaurant. Garrett Tollenger, guest speaker from GriefShare and Compassionate Friends, gave excellent suggestions for navigating grief and life after losing a spouse and offered hope and helpful resources to all in attendance.  Everyone made new connections and were offered Jarrettsville Creamery cookies and a hope of spring flowerpot takeaway with Forget-Me-Not seeds to plant. We are hopeful to continue to grow these relationships and are grateful for all who came out.

January Joy: January 2023

This January, we made the rounds to give back to those who give so much to us and our community. Missie and Amy got to 'go bananas' bringing delicious pretzels (from the Pretzel Lady) and fruit bowls to 10 of our nursing home and hospice care facilities in the area.  We also have gotten to back the blue who we so much appreciate by bringing lunch to the Harford County Sheriff's Offices and Town of Bel Air Police--Jarrettsville Creamery for Northern Precinct and Sunny Day for Southern Precinct, Main Precinct and Town of Bel Air police. Our hope is to keep encouraging those who do so much for all of us. May the joy keep going in 2023!

When our guys pulled up to their headquarters with a truck filled with gifts of all kinds for children of all ages, the children were so excited. Thank you to all who gave so generously to bless those less fortunate in our community so they could enjoy a wonder-filled Christmas

Father's Day Food Truck Event: Friday, June 18, 2021

A beautiful day was had by all in sunny Jarrettsville! So many grateful fathers and community members came out to fabulous food provided by JD's House of Bacon. Lots of folks grabbed their food and drink and enjoyed them on the patio or in the Celebration Room. Some new friends were made around tables and some older ones came out to be together. AND! We raised nearly $350 for the Sunflower Fund which helps local families in need, contributes to Boy Scout projects, and helps local schools. Many Jarrettsville businesses contributed to the event and all were grateful to the McComas family for making it happen. Thanks to all who supported our event!

LONGWOOD GARDENS BUS TRIP

In May of this year, McComas Family Funeral Homes sponsored its annual Widow/Widower bus trip to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. This annual trip is meant to bring together families who have recently lost a spouse, and to offer them a day out at the Gardens. McComas Family Funeral Homes has sponsored such trips for the past 5 years. Holly McComas, who coordinates the trip, says “we enjoy the fact that we are able to do something like this in an effort to give back and allow for folks to gather in a relaxed and beautiful setting. It has been so well received over the years, that we intend to continue this tradition for years to come.”

AL WARD AMERICAN FLAG RETIREMENT PROGRAM

In 2016, the McComas family began examining the services provided to our military families and made the decision to consider retiring an unserviceable United States flag with those service men and women veterans who choose to be cremated.

Research into offering such a service found that United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
McComas launched a program to provide the service, receiving results beyond our wildest expectations. Soon, we had non-military families requesting that a flag be cremated with their loved one.

If you have an American Flag that is no larger than the standard burial flag (5’ x 8’), that is unserviceable or no longer used and is hidden away in the garage, shed or basement because you don’t know what to do with it, consider dropping off your flag at any of the McComas Funeral Home locations in Abingdon, Bel Air or Jarrettsville. They may also be deposited in a drop box at any of our partner locations:

  •  American Legion Post 17 - 415 Edgewood Rd. (Rt 40), Edgewood, MD
  •  American Legion Post 39 - 500 N Hickory Ave., Bel Air, MD
  •  VFW Post 10146 - 3440 Conowingo Rd. (Rt 1), Street, MD

When requested, an American Flag is honorably cremated with the loved one. However, when our inventory exceeds operational needs, one of our partner organizations may hold a formal ceremony to retire the American Flags. While McComas has customarily used representatives of the American Legion, VFW or Scouting organizations, we would consider other civic organizations for conducting an appropriate retirement ceremony. If interested, please contact our Director of Cremation Operations at ltooman@mccomasfuneralhome.com for information and details.
