Barbara Theresa Shlikas

Age: 79

Born: February 28, 1939
Died: July 2, 2018

Born in Baltimore, Maryland. Grew up in Essex, Maryland, and lived in Rosedale, Bel Air, and Jarrettsville, Maryland. Mother of Edward Shlikas and Gregory Shlikas. Grandmother of Gabrielle Shlikas and Jamie Shlikas. Sister of Margaret Pindell and Helen Rogers. Predeceased by Father, Eric Kuhnke, Mother, Barbara Kuhnke, Brother, Eric Kuhnke, and Husband, Edward Shlikas.

Graduated from St. Michael’s Business School. Worked as a legal secretary for several law firms, including Rocklin & Rocklin, Piper & Marbury, and Niles, Barton, & Wilmer, ran her own bookkeeping business, providing her excellent, exacting, and confidential services to, and trusted by, the heirs of many wealthy estates in Maryland, because of her good name. Leader of Ladies’ Prayer and Share at Joppa Gospel Tabernacle.

An amazing, caring, kind, courageous, generous, strong-willed Christian woman, who loved God, God’s word, Jesus, and all of God’s creatures, great and small. Loved flowers, birds, butterflies, fishing (she was a meat fisherman, who hated to throw anything back), the environment (recycled everything, composted, and didn’t allow paper towels, styrofoam, or any “disposable” products in the house, which meant lots of washing, which she never seemed to mind) driving in the country, singing, dancing, reading History and the Bible, and eating healthy food, often traveling hundreds of miles to get the most nutritious food.

Loved to sing and dance with her family, friends, and the church choir. She and her sisters could Polka, Waltz, and do the Cha-Cha like nobody’s business.

She was very generous, often giving away and lending her possessions, like her car and housewares, to anyone who needed them, as well as giving rides to anyone who needed one, for parties, to get to doctors’ appointments, work, or any place friends, family, and acquaintances needed to go.

She courageously and bravely fought metastatic breast cancer that spread to her spine, and atrial fibrillation, on her own terms, for 9 years, without chemotherapy and without blood thinners, like Coumadin, and fought cancer and afib over the last 2 years of her life completely on her own, after the oncologists flatly told her that she “should be dead now” with the type of cancer she had, and there was “nothing else they could do” for her, with faith in God and eating the right foods, while continuing to run her own bookkeeping business, hosting parties for friends and family, traveling, and enjoying a high quality of life, up until the very end of her life.

Loved her family and friends, always getting them together for dinners, parties, and vacations. Lived and led a truly Christian life. Cared deeply about others, always putting them first, keeping confidence, her word, and her good name, following God’s word, which was of the utmost importance to her. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, as she was loved, led, and influenced many.

Following Barbara's wishes, a private graveside service for family was held at the Jarrettsville Cemetery, located at 3730 Federal Hill Road, Jarrettsville, Maryland 21084, on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at 10:00 AM.

All are welcome to a memorial service on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at 11:00 AM, at Joppa Bible Fellowship, located at 1911 East Joppa Road, Parkville, MD 21234.
