The E.G. Kurtz & Son Funeral Home, P.A., was founded in 1844 by Martin Kurtz, a cabinetmaker, who came from Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania to Jarrettsville.  Martin continued in the business until his death in 1883.  He was succeeded in the business by his son Edmund G. (E.G.) Kurtz. The business is named after him. E.G. Kurtz died in 1928, succeeded by his son Martin G. Kurtz, Sr. Martin G. Kurtz, Sr. moved the business in 1945 to the present location from across the road from the cabinet shop, he died in 1971, his two sons succeeded him, Charles E. Kurtz and M. Gladden Kurtz, Jr. M. Gladden Kurtz, Jr. died in 1973, followed by Charles E. Kurtz in 1984.  The E.G. Kurtz & Son Funeral Home, P.A. is in the sixth generation of the Kurtz family.  M. Gladden Kurtz, III and Benjamin W. Kurtz , and Ben's daughter Tiffany L. Edwards (nee Kurtz) own and operate the business today.

M. Gladden Kurtz, III was born in Harford County and raised in Jarrettsville.  Graduated from North Harford High School in 1967. Attended Harford Community College majoring in Business Administration and graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1969.  Gladden became a licensed mortician in Maryland in 1972,  after serving two years of apprenticeship at the funeral home.  Active member of the Jarrettsville Vol. Fire Co since 1965, he served through the ranks obtaining Fire Chief, Director on the Board, Financial Secretary and Treasurer.  Active in the Harford Cecil Vol. Firemen’s Association, inducted into Harford-Cecil Vol. Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame in 1996.  Married and has a son and daughter, he lives in Jarrettsville with his family.

Benjamin W. Kurtz was born in Harford County and raised in Jarrettsville. Graduated from North Harford High School in 1974. Attended Harford Community College majoring in Business Administration and graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1976. Passed his National Board Exam in 1976. Ben became a licensed mortician in Maryland in 1978,  after serving two years of apprenticeship at the funeral home. Active member of the Jarrettsville Vol. Fire Co. since 1972, he served through the ranks obtaining Fire Chief, EMS Chief, Vice-President, President. He also has served as President of the Harford County Vol. Fire & EMS Association as well as Harford-Cecil Vol. Firemen’s Association. Active in Maryland State Firemen’s Association; inducted into the Harford-Cecil Vol. Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame in 1999 and Maryland State Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame in 2003.  Ben and has a daughter, he lives in Jarrettsville with his family.

Tiffany L. Edwards (nee Kurtz) was born in Baltimore, and raised in Baltimore County.  Graduated from Parkville High School in 2003.  Attended  York College majoring in Biology, Towson State University, Community College of Baltimore County (Essex and Catonsville campus).  She graduated from Community College of Baltimore County (Catonsville campus) with a AA degree in Mortuary Science in 2011. Passed her National Board Exam in 2012.   Tiffany became a licensed mortician in Maryland in 2012,  after serving her two years apprenticeship at the funeral home.  Married, she lives in Harford County with her family.
